Kathmandu. Rastriya Swatantra Party lawmaker and former Education Minister Sumana Shrestha has said that private schools should not be nationalized but made non-profit.

Speaking at a meeting of the Education, Health and Information Technology Committee under the House of Representatives on Sunday, former minister Shrestha said that the private schools should not be nationalized but made non-profit.

She objected to the statements coming from the private schools regarding the monitoring carried out by the Ministry of Industry and stressed the need to strictly enforce the regulation. Stating that the ministry has not come to the discussion with preparations, she said that if the discussion on these issues continues in the next meeting, then there will be no discussion other than recording and narrating today’s discussion.

“It is not about nationalising or restricting the private sector,” she said. It means that the private sector should be made non-profit. How long will it take 15 or 20 years for that? We have to make decisions for the rights of the private sector. We had asked the Ministry of Education to work out on the issues ranging from salaries to scholarship provisions to how to discuss the regulation side strictly, if the ministry does not come with preparations, then today’s discussion will be recorded in the committee meeting from tomorrow. ’

She also stressed the need for the committee to be clear on how long it would take to make private schools non-profit.
