Kathmandu. The friendly relations between Nepal and Thailand, which have been strengthened by cooperation in tourism, trade and education as well as Buddhist culture and tradition, are expected to be further strengthened by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s official visit to Thailand starting tomorrow.
Nepal and Thailand have close relations not only at the government level but also at the people’s level. The settlement of about 80,000 citizens of Nepali origin in Thailand also reflects the unique relationship between the two countries. Nepal’s relations with Thailand, which are linked by cultural and civilizational values, are based on mutual goodwill and understanding. This has become even more harmonious since the establishment of diplomatic relations on November 30, 1959.
The teachings of Lord Buddha and the values developed from them have been a major link connecting the people of Nepal and Thailand. Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, is a sacred pilgrimage site for the people of Thailand.
The Thai government has also built a Buddhist monastery in Lumbini to strengthen mutual relations religiously.
The Thai people have immense faith and reverence for King Janak and Janakpur. Nepali Ambassador to Bangkok Dhan Bahadur Oli said that the number of Nepalis going to Thailand for tourism, maritime observation, study and trade has been increasing recently.
The trade exchange between Nepal and Thailand has also helped to strengthen the relations between the two countries. Thai citizens have invested in Nepal’s manufacturing and tourism industries. However, our trade with Thailand is in deficit.
Nepal exports herbs, handicrafts, chhurpi, Nepali paper, and alloka cloth, while Thailand imports electrical equipment, automobiles and other vehicle parts, ready-made garments, and fruits. Thai citizens also visit Nepal. In 2023, more than 25,000 Thai tourists visited Nepal.
