Preserving ancient originality to link nature and culture with trekking tourism

Gandaki. Pasgaon of Kholasonthar Rural Municipality-6 of Lamjung has been attracting tourists due to the dishes of sisno vegetables, pumpkin sail, nigura, gittha etc. This village, which preserves the traditional culture and culture along with natural beauty, looks like a living museum for Gurung culture and culture.

Situated at an altitude of 1,650 meters above sea level, the ancient originality of this village has been preserved by the locals.  In this village, where the cultures have been passed down, one can still observe the vanishing culture of the Gurung community including Krishnacharitra dance, Sarangi dance, Jhyaure dance, Satighatu dance, etc.

Ratan Singh Gurung, secretary of Pasgaon Collective Homestay, said that the homestay has been operated in this village since 2060 BS with the aim of connecting the nature and culture of the village with tourism. Homestays are being operated in 22 houses of the village with the aim of highlighting the tourism potential of the village, he said.

He also said that the long-term goal is to achieve economic prosperity through tourism in the village itself by preventing the increasing migration by preserving the ancient originality. Although established in 2060 BS, the homestay, which has been formally registered since 2074 BS, has the capacity to accommodate up to 100 people per day, he said. Initially, a homestay was started from three houses.

In order to protect the local originality of the village, the houses covered with stones have been preserved, while the squares and roads of the village have been printed with stone. The traditional revolving houses in the village have further enhanced the beauty of the village.

Most of the 153 houses here have their roofs covered with stones. Along with the view tower, various other structures have been constructed at Khomredanda at the head of the village. The amazing nature-carved rocks at the bottom of the village and the natural instruments playing the eyebrows while blowing, etc. have also increased the beauty and importance of the village.

Likewise, the rocks that look like Mount Kailash as well as the shapes of various gods and goddesses are further highlighting the religious significance here, according to locals. It is also believed that lamas have lived on the white cliff in the area where the rock is located since ancient times. The locals worship the natural idol of the goddess located at the foot of the big rock here with great reverence.

The Gurung Tourism Entrepreneurs Association Gandaki Province has also started promotion programmes to include the gharbas here under the Gurung Heritage Trekking Route. Founder chair of the association and coordinator of Gurung Heritage Trekking Programme, Bobar Jung Gurung, said that the association has started promotion and development programs by incorporating ancient Gurung villages including Pasgaun in the Gurung heritage trekking route.

Association Chair Kisam Kumari Gurung said that the heritage trekking route covering different parts of Kaski, Lamjung and Manang has been declared and a study and research programme has been conducted in a phased manner with a plan to make it fully operational from 2026.

According to him, under the third phase of the programme, the association has started an exploratory trekking from Pokhara to Singdi, Pasgaun and other places including Dudhpokhari, Gurung Deurali and other places.

MayaDevi Gurung, a member of the homestay operator, said that they have taken the program to connect Pasgaon with the trekking as meaningful. Stating that the local products are being fed to the tourists coming to Pasgaon, she shared her experience of returning happy when the tourists return.

She expressed the belief that the nature and culture of the country would reach the tourism market once it is connected with trekking. There are also various alternative routes for tourists who want to come to Pasgaon. You can come here from Besisahar of Lamjung via Ghalegaon, Bhujung, and from Besisahar you can also come through Maling, Salme Bhanjyang. Vehicles coming from Pokhara via Kalika and Rambazar Karputar are operating here.

Locals have complained that the road towards Madi in Kaski to come here via Pokhara has not yet been arranged. General Secretary of Gurung Tourism Entrepreneurs Association, Gandaki Province, Tul Gurung, said that awareness of the locals would also be necessary for the promotion and development of the villages including Pasgaun included in the mapping of gurung heritage trekking route.

He said that along with the use of nature and culture, collective efforts of all would also be necessary for the hospitality provided to the tourists.
