Preparations for Prime Minister’s visit to Spain complete, an opportunity to raise investment in sustainable development for underdeveloped countries

Kathmandu. Preparations for Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s visit to Spain, leading the Nepali delegation to the United Nations’ Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, have been completed. Prime Minister Oli is visiting Spain at the friendly invitation of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez for the ‘International Conference on Financing for Development of the United Nations (FFD-40)’ to be held in Seville, Spain.

This conference on financing for development will be attended by leaders of all governments of the world, global and regional organizations, financial and trade institutions, businessmen, civil society and relevant representatives of the United Nations system. Nepal will also advocate for the voices of the least developed, small and island developing countries at the conference. The conference will also discuss the implementation of investment commitments made by rich countries to poor and small countries.

Prime Minister Oli’s Chief Advisor Bishnu Prasad Rimal said that Prime Minister Oli is visiting as this forum is important to promote international cooperation for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to be achieved by 2030. Stating that the preparations for Prime Minister Oli’s visit have been completed, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lo Bahadur Poudel Chhetri, said that the conference will focus on the challenges of immediate and long-term support and investment required for sustainable development by improving the global financial structure.

Spokesperson Chhetri said that since it is the most important conference between developed countries and developing and least developed countries on issues including sustainable development, finance for development and especially development assistance, investment, technology transfer, and so on, high priority and high-level participation will be important. He also said that Nepal will have a distinct role as Nepal is currently chairing the International Coordination of Least Developed Countries.

During the visit, Prime Minister Oli will address the conference. Prime Minister Oli will pay a courtesy call on King Felipe II of Spain and meet with his Spanish counterpart Sanchez, and will hold ‘sideline’ meetings with leaders of other countries of the world. For the conference to be held from Asad 16 to 19, Prime Minister Oli will leave for Madrid via Doha, Qatar on Saturday, Asad 14 at 6 pm and is scheduled to return on Friday, Asad 20 at 4:45 pm. This high-level visit from Nepal is believed to contribute to the increase in investment from developed countries in Nepal as well as the attraction of tourists from European countries including Spain.

A total of 21-member visiting delegation will include First Lady Radhika Shakya, Chief Advisor to the Prime Minister Bishnu Prasad Rimal, Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Amrit Bahadur Rai, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance Ghanashyam Upadhyay, Secretary to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers Rajkumar Shrestha, Chief Reception Secretary to the Prime Minister Rajesh Bajracharya, Personal Physician to the Prime Minister Dr. Smriti Shakya, Joint Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Krishna Prasad Dhakal, Joint Secretary to the Ministry of Finance Dhaniram Sharma, and Chief of Protocol to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Kumar Raj Kharel. There will be a 29-member Nepali delegation, including 21 from Kathmandu, eight from Spain and eight from New York.

The visiting delegation included Nepali Ambassador to Spain Shanil Nepal, Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations Lok Bahadur Thapa, and others.
