Parbat. It is estimated that potato production will increase in the district this year due to favorable weather conditions along with the expansion of potato cultivation area. Under the Food Potato Expansion Program, which was started last year with the aim of making the district self-reliant in potato production, potato cultivation was carried out on an area of 1,450 hectares this winter.
The Agricultural Knowledge Center estimates that potato production will be at the rate of 15 metric tons per hectare this year. Accordingly, about 22 thousand metric tons of potatoes will be produced in winter alone, informed the head of the Agricultural Knowledge Center, Parashuram Adhikari. It is estimated that farmers will earn around Rs 870 million if they sell potatoes at an average rate of Rs 40 per kg.
In the last fiscal year 2080/81, 20,330 metric tons of potatoes were produced in the district while cultivating potatoes on an area of 1,390 hectares.
According to Sobita Subedi, Information Officer of the Agricultural Knowledge Center, 61 farmer groups in various pocket areas have been distributed a subsidy of Rs 14.7 million for potato production. Information Officer Subedi said that 70 percent subsidy has been given for seed procurement, 50 percent for mechanization, 85 percent for irrigation infrastructure and 75 percent for marketing and packaging.
16 farmer groups of Jaljala Rural Municipality have taken subsidy for potato production. To get subsidy, the farmer group must have cultivated potatoes collectively in an area of at least 30 ropanis.
Eight farmer groups have cultivated potatoes in an area of about 450 ropanis including Lespar, Kyang, Chapa, Bajung in Modi Rural Municipality-4, 5, 6, 7, 9. Farmers are cultivating potatoes in an area of more than 225 ropanis in the potato pocket area of Kushma Municipality, including Pang, Khurkot, Arthur. Farmers from Mudikuwa, Shankarpokhari, Kurgha, Limithana, Chirdikhola and other areas of Phalebas Municipality have collectively cultivated potatoes in an area of 220 ropanis.
Similarly, six farmer groups are cultivating potatoes in Mahashila Rural Municipality, Huwas area of Paiyun Rural Municipality in Dakshin Parbat. Chief of the Agricultural Knowledge Center, Parshuram Adhikari, said that potato production will increase this year compared to last year. He said that since farmers are currently in a hurry to dig potatoes, accurate statistics on potato production will be available after a month.
