Kathmandu. Pope Francis passed away on Monday at the age of 88. The Pope’s death came a day after a much-anticipated appearance in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday, the Vatican said in a statement.
“Dear brothers and sisters, it is with profound sadness that I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” Cardinal Kevin Farrell said in a statement published by the Vatican on its Telegram channel. “At 735 am (0535 GMT) this morning, Francis, Bishop of Rome, returned to the house of the Father, a life dedicated to the service of the Lord and his Church.”
Francis’ death came just one day after he appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica on Easter Sunday, delighting crowds at the Vatican. .
Francis has twice come close to death this year after suffering from pneumonia. He spent 38 days in hospital before being discharged on March 23. On Sunday, he waved to crowds in St. Peter’s Square to wish them a “Happy Easter” and called for freedom of thought and tolerance in his traditional “Urbi et Orbi” (to the city and the world) blessing.
