Kathmandu. Nepali Congress MP Hridayram Thani has expressed concern over the continuous political interference in the internal structure and leadership system of the Nepal Police.

Speaking at the meeting of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee under the House of Representatives held at Singha Durbar on Wednesday to hold a principled discussion on the bill to amend the Nepal Police law, he expressed his concern.

Referring to the controversial decisions taken by the police leadership in the past, he argued that those steps have weakened the ‘chain of command’ of the police organization. He reminded that there is a history of removing the IGP after 30 years of service, transferring the Inspector General of Police to another place in 36 days, winning the court case and becoming the IGP twice.

He also pointed out that there is a history of making Kanishka the AIG a month ago and taking him to the court, leaving the first number and making the third and second number as IGPs. He stressed that everyone, including the Home Minister, should pay attention to how the police, which operates under command and control, is working amidst political interference.

He said, ‘We have been politicizing the police a lot. For this reason, we are also repeatedly working to undermine the position of the Nepal Police in various ways. During our 32 years of service, we have removed the IGP after making him 30 years old, and at times, we have done the same thing by transferring the Inspector General of Police within 36 days of his appointment. Again, the situation where the IGP himself came to court and won and became the IGP twice is also in our history.’

‘We also have a history of making a junior AIG a month ago and making him IGP. Sometimes, we have made him number 3 and number 2 and took him to the respected court instead of making him number 1. Everyone, including the Home Minister, should pay attention to how the Nepal Police is working in such a situation. What will happen if we keep the organization that should run under command and control in politics? “Therefore, in the current situation, the chain of command has been affected,” he said.

He also said that political interference, among other things, has weakened the Nepal Police.
