Kathmandu. China’s pizza market is expected to reach more than 100 billion yuan in the next five years.

China’s pizza market is projected to exceed 60 billion yuan in 2025 from 48 billion yuan in 2024, according to an industry report released at the ongoing International Food Exhibition in Shanghai.

As of March 2024, there are more than 60,000 pizza shops across China. From 2016 to 2022, pizza shops in tier III cities and villages grew at an annual rate of 10 per cent, up from 7.6 per cent in large cities.

About 15,000 new pizza shops are expected to open in these small cities between 2025 and 2027. For the first time in 2022, sales of pizza ordered online (via the Internet) in China exceeded direct shop sales, with a share exceeding 58 percent. This ratio is expected to increase further in the coming years.

China’s first foreign-funded pizza restaurant opened in 1990. At the time, pizza was considered an expensive Western dish and was only available in large cities. But in the last few years, pizza has become popular in rural areas.

According to analysts, the increase in demand for pizza has been contributed by easy dishes, the search for new flavors, textures similar to local dishes, and an increase in the spending capacity of consumers in rural areas.

According to the report, the number of pizza shops in China is still low in proportion to the population. Industry analysts said the development of China’s pizza market is a sign of its open consumer culture and long-term economic potential.

The exhibition is being held in Shanghai in 2025 and more than 5,000 food companies from 75 countries and regions are participating.
