Kathmandu. The Department of Food Technology and Quality Control has conducted pesticide tests at the Balkhu Vegetable Market through a ‘Well Equipped Mobile Food Lab Van’. The department’s skilled human resources have taken 9 types of vegetable samples and tested them for pesticides. The department has stated that most of the vegetables were found edible during the test.
Food Research Officer of the department, Ishwar Subedi, said that up to 20 percent pesticides were found in the test of 9 types of vegetable samples at the Balkhu Vegetable Market. He informed that the results of the test were correct. He informed that all the vegetables tested are edible.
He said that ‘enzyme inhibition’ was found from a minimum of 2 percent to a maximum of 27 percent. He said that those with enzyme inhibition less than 35 percent are considered edible. He said that there is a provision to quarantine and re-test those with 35 to 45 percent enzyme inhibition and if more than 45 percent is found, it will be rejected and destroyed. He said that samples of vegetables from 20 different districts including Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Kavrepalanchok, Nuwakot, Ramechhap, Sarlahi, Dhanusha, etc. have been collected and tested at the Balkhu Vegetable Market.
He informed that the department is running a campaign to test pesticides in all vegetable markets in the valley through a mobile food lab van.
