Kavrepalanchowk. Panchkhal Municipality, which is known as a storehouse of food and vegetables, has set up a targeted agricultural produce collection and marketing center to collect pesticide-free vegetables. The centre has been set up to collect vegetables produced using only organic pesticides without using chemical pesticides.
LoveGreen Nepal and Panchkhal Municipality had partnered with Rs 2.5 million and Rs 900,000 respectively to set up the centre. According to Mahesh Kharel, mayor of Panchkhal, the centre has been brought into operation to collect vegetables produced through integrated pest management (IPM) technology.
“We aim to supply the agricultural produce collected at the centre to kathmandu through packaging, branding and sorting,” Kharel said. According to him, the production of organic vegetables has led to success in eradicating the decades-long propaganda about vegetables produced in Panchkhal. Kharel said that the process of operating the haat bazaar will now be forwarded.
The centre was jointly inaugurated by Machuzaki Mizuki, Chief Representative of The International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Government of Japan, Nepal, Mayor Kharel and President of Lovegreen Nepal Amira Dali on Saturday. The centre will help in the production of pesticide-free vegetables in the city, said Machuzaki, chief representative of JICA Nepal.
The environment-friendly Integrated Sustainable Agriculture Development Project, jointly run by the Municipality Office and Lovegreen Nepal, has been carrying out a campaign to make panchkhal pesticide-free for nearly four years. A total of 1,200 leading farmers who have studied 22 types of IPM technology at the 18-month-old IPM Krishak Pathshala at the centre are expected to collect vegetables produced using organic pesticides.
