Two streams of moonlight. Parbati Dagaura of Dharpur, Bedkot Municipality-5, Kanchanpur, who used to earn Rs. 500 a day by working as a daily wage laborer, has recently started earning Rs. 1,000 a day.
After working as a woman in the construction of houses and various structures, she started receiving less wages, so Parbati learned the work of a mason with the plan to take on house construction contracts herself.
‘After working as a man in the construction of houses, she started receiving less wages, so I planned to work as a mason and take on house construction contracts myself,’ said Parbati. ‘With the help of a donor agency, I took training as a civil engineer at the ward office.’
She And she said that she took a 60-day training as a mason with the support of Needs Nepal Kanchanpur’s Sustainable Income and Women’s Empowerment Project.
‘Initially, I used to work as a laborer and received only Rs. 500 per day. Now, I have started taking house construction contracts myself,’ said Dagoura, ‘Now, I earn Rs. 1,000 per day when I work as a mason.’ She says that she got a house construction contract in the village as soon as she completed her training as a mason.
‘It was difficult to meet household expenses by working as a laborer, so now I dared to work as a mason myself,’ she said, ‘I have made the wages equal for both men and women. There has been no discrimination in wages like what she experienced.’
Parvati has completed the construction of three houses in the village. She says that she gets the contract for another house before the work on one house is completed. ‘It has become much easier now, contracts are being obtained,’ she said. ‘Earlier, when I went to work for a wage, the contractor would return it even if I was a little late.’
Dagoura says that if there is a strong will, patience and continuity, nothing is impossible. ‘There is a lot of wage discrimination here, men are paid more for the same work and women are paid less,’ she said. ‘To end this discrimination, I have taken the courage to get trained and started taking house construction contracts myself,’ she said. Now she has given employment to other women.
