The residents of the eastern hilly district border area have faced problems due to the lack of schools on the Nepal side. Parents in the area say that they are forced to educate their children at high fees due to the lack of schools on the Nepal side.
Pema Tamang of Sandakpur Rural Municipality-5 in Ilam is nine years old. She studies in an Indian school. She says that she is forced to study in India as there is no school near her home. Tamang has been studying in a hostel in India.
A local Dawa Lama said that after the schools on the Nepal side were also closed, most of the residents of the area were forced to send their children to Indian schools.
Some parents are sending their children to hostels, while others are renting rooms in India. The problem has arisen because schools on the Nepal side have been closed due to lack of students. Many students from the area are studying in various schools in Manebhanjyang. They have also had to rely on Indian schools to pursue higher education.
Parents are worried about having to send their young children to India for primary school. Meanwhile, community schools have been closed due to lack of students.
There are no private schools in Nepal in that region. In the northern region bordering India, community schools in villages have been closed, forcing people to study there.
There is also a lack of children in that sparsely populated region. Children in the northern region of Sandakpur Rural Municipality, Maijogmai Rural Municipality and Suryodaya Municipality border areas are facing problems in studying.
Sonam Sherpa of Jaubari said that after schools were closed in places like Jaubari, Meghma, Kalpokhari and others for a few years, children were forced to go and live with their parents in the Indian region to study from the primary level.
Since it is a Lekali area, the settlement is sparse. The population density is also low. Local Doma Sherpa said that the National Primary School in Jaubari, Sandakpur Rural Municipality-5 was closed nine years ago.
The school, which teaches up to class 5, was closed in 2072 BS due to lack of students. Currently, 14 students from Jaubari alone are going to study in India. The school in Bhitte was also shifted to another place three years ago. Locals say that the problem has worsened after the school was closed.
The primary school in Kalpokhari, Sandakpur-5, the Saraswati Primary School in Megma, Maijogmai-2, and the primary school in Majuwa, Sandakpur-5 are closed. Locals say that there are no schools near Nepal. It takes four hours to reach Jyoti School in Maijogmai-2.
The center of other rural municipalities is forced to go to Naya Bazaar. It also takes three to four hours to reach the school in Naya Bazaar. Parents are unable to work while taking their children to school for a long time. They say that they have to work to take one of their children to school and bring them home.
About 35 students from Jaubari, Gurase, Megma, etc., are deprived of going to school in Nepal, said Dambar Subedi, ward chair of Maijogmai Rural Municipality-2.
Children from Lamidhura area of Suryodaya Municipality are also not able to study in Nepal. They are also forced to go to the nearest Indian school. ‘It costs a lot to educate even one student. We have to keep a hostel. Otherwise, we have to rent a room,’ said local Phurba Sherpa.
Some children from the border area go to school from home. Some people send their students by bus. Manebhanjyang is 11 kilometers from Tumling. Some parents also use other vehicles to send their children to school.
