Agency. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that his country will focus more on the progress of the agricultural sector to boost economic growth, ensure food security and earn valuable foreign exchange. “Pakistan must increase the share of agriculture in the country’s economy, as about 65 percent of our population is directly or indirectly related to agriculture,” the prime minister said at an event.
He said that if quality seeds, fertilizers and medicines are available on time, there will be a revolution in the agricultural sector and an increase in exports. He mentioned that the government is taking initiatives for local production of agricultural machinery including combine harvesters.
Highlighting various measures to strengthen the agriculture sector, Sharif said that all stakeholders including provincial governments, farmers, researchers and scientists should join hands to further develop the sector with the help of the Centre.
He said that Pakistan was wasting valuable foreign exchange reserves on palm oil imports and there was a need to reverse this trend by increasing local production. “We should work together for the development of the country. We will work hard to transform our agriculture sector,” he said.
