Jhapa. 50,917 landless Dalits, squatters and unorganized settlers in the district have applied for land ownership certificates.
In a land-related interaction organized at the assembly hall of Mechinagar Municipality today, National Land Commission Central Chairman Hari Prasad Rijal gave this information and said that the commission is working rapidly to complete the process and distribute land ownership certificates.
Chairman Rijal accused the rights of the landless of being violated by not approving the land-related ordinance. He claimed that the current Land Commission is different from the previous three commissions, saying that the current commission is a constitutional commission and its term is set for three years.
In the program, Anil Krishna Prasai, central member of the commission and Koshi Province Coordinator, said that land titles would be distributed to 1.3 million landless squatters in Nepal within the next two years. At the program, Jhapa Chairman of the Land Commission, Madan Adhikari, said that the applications received through the municipality will be registered and distributed soon after completing the process without collaborating with intermediaries.
Dr. Jagat Bahadur Basnet, central expert of the National Land Commission, informed the local level people’s representatives and employees about the work, duties and rights of the commission, including its future action plan.
Mechinagar Municipality Mayor Gopal Chandra Budhathoki said that preparations are underway to distribute land ownership certificates to the actual rightful owners. He informed that 6,330 landless Dalits, landless squatters and unorganized settlers in Mechinagar have applied for property certificates, of which 5,151 have already received the certificates.
In Mechinagar, 6,330 people, including 358 landless Dalits, 2,246 landless squatters and 3,726 unorganized settlers, have applied to the municipality to receive property certificates.
