Kathmandu. Former Finance Minister and Nepali Congress lawmaker. Prakash Sharan Mahat has said that nepal’s problem is populism. He was speaking at the ‘Post Budget: A Holistic Discourses’ organized by the Economic Media Society Nepal in Kathmandu on Monday.
Stating that the strong desire to be popular now would lead to a very unpopular situation in the future, he stressed the need to work in such a way that they would be popularized with long-term results even though they are unpopular now.
He said that the present government has said that more than 4,500 projects will be cut, which is not enough. He argued that although the budget for the next fiscal year has made some efforts, the projects should not be cut as much as they should have.
Mahat, a former finance minister, said that when he was the finance minister, the cabinet had formulated a working procedure so that projects below Rs 30 million would not be kept from the central government.
He said, “The current budget has made some efforts. For example, we have said that we will cut more than 4,500 projects. However, that’s not enough either. Even when I was speaking in parliament, I had said that the problem of our Nepal is populism. Populism. The strong desire to become popular now puts us in a very unpopular position in the future. That’s why our current choices may be unpopular at the time. But in the long run, we are popular that they have done well. We have to choose that path. It hasn’t been cut as much as it should. At that time, we had passed the working procedure and it was approved by the Council of Ministers that the project should not be kept from the center below Rs 30 million. ‘
Stating that thousands of people are reaching the state capital with projects worth Rs 1.5 million in the name of consumer committee, he said none of these projects would yield results.
