Tanahun. Farmers in Tanahun have earned a total of Rs 425 million from the sale of oranges this year. Last year, oranges worth Rs 300 million were sold in the district. According to the Agricultural Knowledge Center, orange production has also increased this year. This year, oranges were cultivated in an area of 1,657 hectares, and oranges were produced from an area of 968 hectares, informed Kiran Pariyar, the center’s information officer. According to him, 5,831 metric tons of oranges have been produced this year. Last year, 3,750 metric tons of oranges were produced in the district.
According to Pariyar, orange production is good in Devghat, Shuklagandaki and Myagde rural municipalities. Suknarayan Shrestha of Myagde rural municipality-3 Umachowk has earned an income of Rs 7 million by selling oranges this year. Oranges worth up to Rs 2 million have been sold from a single house in Lungring of Devghat Rural Municipality-3.
Farmer Bhim Bahadur Rana informed that oranges worth more than Rs 30 million have been sold from this ward this year. Farmer Prem Thapa said that the farmers here, who were worried about the poor crop in the past, are happy that oranges have started giving good income in recent years. The center has stated that there is a possibility of expanding orange cultivation in a total area of 8,570 hectares in the district. The center has been assisting orange farmers in managing their orchards.
According to Pariyar, there is potential for expansion of orange farming in Devghat-2 and 3, Aanbukhaireni-5, Myagde 4, Byas-7, 13 and 14, Bhimad-8 and 9, Bandipur-3, Rishing-3 and Ghiring. Most of the oranges produced in Tanahun are taken by traders from Kathmandu. Traders often visit the orchards to purchase oranges. Apart from Kathmandu, oranges from here are sold in places such as Pokhara and Narayangadh. Farmers say that oranges from here are also sold in places such as Damauli, Dulegowda, Khairenitar, Bhimad and others in the district. In most places in the district, traders themselves go to the orchards and purchase oranges.
