Orange production increases by 25 percent in Myagdi

Myagdi. Orange production in Myagdi has increased by about 25 percent this year. Oranges are the main agricultural produce sold in Myagdi.

The Agricultural Knowledge Center has reported that orange production has increased by 24.70 percent this year compared to last year. Center chief Sanjeev Bastola said that orange production has increased due to the expansion of new gardens, favorable weather and control of diseases and pests. ‘Myagdi, which produced 3,600 metric tons of oranges last year, has produced 4,781 metric tons this year,’ he said. ‘Myagdi farmers have sold oranges worth 334.6 million this year.’

Oranges have been sold at an average rate of 70 per kilogram. This year, orange production was 11.25 metric tons per hectare, said the center’s chief, Bastola. Last year, orange production was 8.6 metric tons per hectare.

According to the Agricultural Knowledge Center, out of the 810 hectares of orange cultivation area in the district, 425 hectares are bearing fruit. Last year, oranges worth 240 million were sold. The technicians of the Agricultural Knowledge Center have identified the production status of oranges through the ‘crop cutting’ method. Krishnalal Sapkota of Mangala Rural Municipality-3 said that orange production has increased due to the addition of productive trees and favorable weather.

There are more than 200 orange gardens in Rakhu, Marek, Surkemela, Baranja, Bhedabari, Arman, Runma, Bim, Okharbot, Takam, Ghatan, Piple, Bhagwati, Beg, Dowa, Dosalle, Ghar, Bhurung Tatopani, Dana and Narchyang. Oranges are sold in markets including the district headquarters Beni as well as the capital Kathmandu, Pokhara, Muglin and others. Due to the transportation facilities, traders often come to the orchards with their vehicles to buy oranges.

Prime Minister’s Agricultural Modernization Project, Agricultural Knowledge Center and local level agriculture branches have been providing assistance in orange plant distribution, technical training, orchard management, small-scale irrigation and marketing. This year, the Agricultural Knowledge Center has announced that it will conduct an orange orchard strengthening program in 400 ropanis and expand cultivation in an additional 40 ropanis.
