Efforts are underway to revive the 2079 election alliance including the Congress-Maoist, while the UML is trying to continue the current alliance. Sources say that Prime Minister Oli is also trying to form an alliance other than the Congress, while he is forming an alliance with others.
Currently, Prime Minister KP Oli is facing a crisis within his own party. Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has already announced that the UML is returning to politics with the announcement of becoming the president from the upcoming general convention. In fact, Oli has already become a minority among the UML office bearers. Prime Minister Oli is currently on the defensive as the search for his own replacement begins within the government and party he leads.
Sources claim that Oli has started making a counter plan after efforts to topple the government he leads began even before the upcoming UML general convention. “Oli wants to remain the Prime Minister until the general convention as much as possible. If that is not possible, his plan seems to be to remain as the main power partner,” a leader from the UML establishment told Singha Durbar.
Leaders from other parties claim that Oli has planned to remove himself from the government before the general convention and remain in power, concluding that Vidya Bhandari and others are trying to take over the party.
Oli’s first attempt will be to remain the Prime Minister himself. If that is not possible, he will remain as the main power partner. For that, sources claim that Oli is discussing with his close associates whether to maintain the current alliance with the Congress, form a new leftist-leaning alliance with the Maoists and others, and as a last resort, leave Deuba as the main power partner.
According to sources, Oli had sent a message to Deuba that he was ready to leave the post of Prime Minister right now so that he could lead the electoral government before flying to Europe.
‘We understand that he has sent a message that he will make Sher Bahadur Deuba the Prime Minister right now, and that Deuba should lead the electoral government after running for a year and a half,’ a high-ranking UML source told Singha Durbar. There are speculations that a new chapter in politics will begin as soon as Oli returns from Europe.
The solution of recalling all ministers did not work
Sources say that Oli proposed a cabinet reshuffle as soon as the budget was presented. Deuba himself had rejected Oli’s plan to immediately remove the crisis in the government by recalling all the current ministers and appointing new ministers.
Deuba under pressure
Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba is also under intense pressure to break the alliance with the UML. Leaders close to Deuba are putting pressure on him to break the alliance, saying that the psychology of party workers is weakening when the government is run in alliance with the main political rival party, UML. In addition, there is growing resentment within the Congress, saying that the Congress is having to bear the brunt of most of the unpopular decisions made by the current government. It is said that Deuba’s core team has already reached the conclusion that Oli will not leave power to Deuba after a year, showing honesty towards the alliance. Like the new parties, the Congress-UML is also preparing for Mission 84. The fear that a coalition of leftists could form in 84 BS if the current alliance is maintained is also haunting the Congress leadership. Congress leaders are of the opinion that at least the Maoists should be prevented from getting close to the UML.
