Kathmandu. Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA ICC) President Rabina Thapa has announced her candidacy for the post of President again for the upcoming 11th General Convention of the association.
She announced her candidacy by holding a press conference. After the election could not be held in the 10th General Convention, it was agreed that all three candidates for the post of President would work as Presidents in turns. While announcing her candidacy, she announced the ambitious program of the NRNA Global Fund. “As soon as I take over the leadership, the NRNA Global Fund will be established,” said President Thapa, “which will not only be a vehicle for the prosperity of Nepal and Nepalis, but will also be a lifeline in times of crisis.”
She said that this fund, which every member of NRNA will feel proud of, will be the largest fund of the association. She said that she wanted to serve a term after being elected as the first female president in the history of NRNA based on her short tenure. Chairperson Thapa said, “I have done remarkable work during my six-month tenure as the Executive Chairperson. If I am able to complete a full term, I will move the association forward in a vibrant and dynamic manner and create an environment where every Nepali living abroad feels a sense of belonging.”
She informed that important achievements have been made during her tenure, the Parliament and the Government of Nepal have taken important decisions for non-resident Nepali citizenship, the NRNA team participated in the 9th National Games for the first time and won a medal, the infrastructure development of the association’s office in Kathmandu has been made disabled-friendly (from elevators to perimeter walls), the construction of smart toilets has been started in Pokhara (to be handed over soon), a mobile blood transfusion bus has been started to ensure that patients do not face blood shortage (to be handed over soon to three provinces), a hotline service has been started that will be open 24 hours a day to inform Nepalis living abroad if they encounter any problems, and the association’s statute has been unanimously passed for the first time. .
Stressing the need for the future leadership of the association to be in favor of understanding, cooperation and unity, Chair Thapa claimed that she was suitable and capable for this coordinating role. She stressed that the election should not be made inflammatory and reiterated that she was in favor of not only the general convention delegates but also every registered member of the NRNA being able to vote. “This is a purely social organization that helps in the rights and problems of Nepalis living abroad and works for the prosperity of Nepal and Nepalis,” said Chair Thapa. “This is neither a political fraternal organization nor a commercial or professional organization.
Noting that the situation of all Nepalis living abroad is not the same, she emphasized on the leadership that represents the feelings of all those who have built social and economic status, from laborers working in the Gulf to students and those who have built social and economic status. She also mentioned that the formation of a panel against the statute had increased discord in the association and stressed that panels should be completely banned in the 11th General Convention. Stating that extreme factionalism, political maneuvering, disputes and commercialization had reduced the dignity of the association and sent the wrong message, Chair Thapa urged all the NRNA general convention representatives to rise above political exhortations and prejudices and elect capable, strong, dynamic and coordinating leadership.
On the occasion, she unveiled a 25-point manifesto, mentioning issues ranging from structural reforms of the association to cooperation with the Nepal government for the prosperity of Nepal and Nepalis. Her plans and concepts in various sectors including health, education, infrastructure, tourism, communication, agriculture and energy have been included in the manifesto. At the press conference, Chairperson Thapa said that if there are any problems with Nepalis living abroad, from the continuation of their citizenship by descent, to Nepalis going abroad with work permits through Government-to-Government (G2G) and students going abroad on student permits, the Government of Nepal should take immediate action and the NRNA should continuously coordinate in this regard.
