The Weather Forecasting Division of the Department of Water and Meteorology has stated that the cold will increase further as the temperature is dropping. According to the division, the cold has increased due to fog in various parts of the country as well as in the districts of Eastern Tarai and Madhes. In various districts of the Eastern Tarai, thick fog, foggy weather, and cold waves from morning to evening have started increasing due to the cold.
Students, laborers, children, the poor, the helpless, and senior citizens who commute in the morning have been most affected by the cold, said Ram Kumar Karki, President of Sundarharaincha Senior Citizens’ Society. Sundarharaincha Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Narayan Karki mentioned that the market has become deserted as the cold weather has started to increase in the evening.
However, the number of customers has increased in warm clothing shops. Some ordinary locals are forced to burn firewood, sticks, and logs due to the cold. Driver Saroj Lamichhane says that it is also difficult to drive vehicles due to the freezing cold and the fog that makes it impossible to see anything.
Health workers say that children, the elderly, as well as people with heart, asthma, lung, diabetes, and other chronic diseases have increased in the district hospital due to the cold. The Eastern University Teaching Hospital, Gothgaun, has reported that the number of patients suffering from diseases including asthma, pneumonia, colds, and fever has increased along with the cold.
The Biratnagar Airport Civil Aviation Office has stated that flights to the district headquarters Biratnagar have been affected due to the bad weather following the onset of thick fog.
