Mustang. Lulu cow is one of the different breeds of cows reared by the farmers of mustang, Manang and Dolpa districts. The Himalayan Lulu cow, which has been contributing significantly to the eco-system, has been on the verge of extinction lately.

Lulu cow is one of the local breeds of cows that do not have a yoke. The Lulu cow, which is reared in the higher geography of the mountainous region, is slightly lower than other cows. It is reared at a high altitude of 2,500 meters above sea level.

Chief of Veterinary Hospital and Veterinary Service Specialist Center and Veterinary Doctor Dr Lalmani Aryal said that the Lulu cow, which has been following the tradition and culture in Mustang for centuries, is on the verge of extinction lately.

According to him, there were more than 10,000 Lulu cows in Mustang ten years ago, but recently around 6,000 lulu cows have been reared in the fifth municipality of Mustang.

“Lulu cattle rearing in Mustang is declining every year and the local farmers have not shown much interest in its conservation,” said Veterinarian Dr Aryal. ’

The farmers of Mustang have been rearing lulu cows because they need fertilizers for the production of food crops and can produce milk in small quantities. Aitlal Thakali, chief of the animal section of Gharpajhong rural municipality, said that the farmers have neglected to rear Lulu cows as they produce very little milk compared to other cows.

“It has become a matter of great concern that the farmers are not sensitive towards protecting the Lulu cows,” said Thakali, chief of the livestock section. ’

The Lulu cow reared by the farmers of Mustang is considered as an organic dimension of himalayan tradition and culture. However, the threat of extinction of lulu cows reared in the mountainous region has increased as the biodiversity and culture of the area has been affected, said Thakali, chief of the animal section.

The Lulu cattle rearing business, which has been displaced in the district, seems to have been used only for agricultural purposes. With the development of road network and technology in recent times, farmers of Mustang have gradually stopped rearing Lulu cows. Ajit Thakali, a farmer from Gharpajhong, said that the farmers have stopped protecting the Lulu cows reared in mustang.

“The farmers started ignoring lulu cows more than other animals and started abandoning them indiscriminately,” he said. Earlier, 10-12 Lulu cows were reared in a single house, but now there is not even a single Lulu cow in a house, said Thakali. Farmer Thakali said that with the development of agriculture and tourism, lulu has stopped believing that cows should be protected.

Lulu cows produce a maximum of one liter of milk in the morning and evening. Due to less milk production and high labor and cost, the lulu cows of the mountains have started disappearing. Similarly, there is a challenge in the conservation of Lulu cows in Mustang as the farmers do not protect the lulugai calves and the dogs and snow leopards eat them.

Due to the increase in the temperature of the land due to climate change, the water sources in the high lakes and kharks have started drying up, due to which the grass has stopped growing in the grazing area, so it is customary for the farmers to leave the lulu cows in the streets and streets. Despite having the ability to manage food on its own, lulu cows have not been able to manage the food, due to which they are found to be able to feed by eating papers mixed in villages and streets and food thrown by others.
