Kathmandu. Today, the first day of the new year, Baishakh 1, 2082 BS, is being celebrated with joy and happiness across the country by exchanging greetings. Today is the day when the Sun ends its journey in Pisces and begins its journey in Aries, which is also the first day of the year. Madhav Bhattarai, former chairman of the Nepal Panchanga Nirikh Bikash Samiti, says that Vikram Samvat is eternal because it runs with the movement of the sun.

“Since Vikram is one of the 60 Samvatsars and is related to Aditya Surya, it is called Vikramaditya Samvat. Vikram Samvat runs according to the movement and position of the sun. It includes the characteristics of the Shaka Samvat and the practical properties of the Christian Samvat,” he said.

Scholars say that it is scientific because it starts when the sun enters Aries and leaves Pisces, the old year of this Samvat ends and the new year begins. The coordination of the solar and lunar periods also occurs in this Samvat. The Vikram Samvat has begun 3,044 years after the beginning of the Kali Yuga.

Every person evaluates the success and failure of the work done in the previous year today and makes plans and resolves to avoid repeating the failure and achieve success. Today, people take a bath early in the morning, clean their homes and courtyards, go to temples and monasteries to worship and have darshan, eat sweets, meet friends and acquaintances and exchange good wishes.

Nepalese living in any corner of the world celebrate Baisakh 1st as the New Year. According to the lunar calendar, the new Samvatsar, which begins on the day of the first full moon of Chaitra, has already begun on Chaitra 17th. Prof. Shree Krishna Adhikari, Chairman of Nepal Panchanga Nirikh Bikash Samiti, said that the Samvatsar named Siddharti has started from Chaitra 17. According to Vedic Sanatan Hinduism, there are 60 Samvatsars. These Samvatsars have been rotating since time immemorial. The name of the first of the Shashti Samvatsars is Prabhava. The current Siddharti is the 53rd Samvatsar.
