Chitwan. A new project has been launched in the district for the quality, production and marketing of milk produced. The Chitwan District Milk Producers Cooperative Association has initiated work to operate the ‘Milky Way’ project to increase the quality and production of milk produced in the district.
The project has been brought with the objective of facilitating farmers to increase the marketing, quality and production of milk produced in the district. Association President Kishor Bagale said that through this project, the cost of milk production will be reduced, support will be provided to solve problems related to the health of livestock, increase the use of machinery and equipment, support market management, and support the production and collection of clean and pure milk.
According to him, work will be done to identify priorities in the dairy sector and improve breed. Once the project is operational, 115 dairy producer cooperatives in the district and their affiliated farmers will directly benefit.
Speakers at a program organized here today said that this project will be fruitful in saving farmers from problems of milk production, marketing and not getting prices. The association had an interaction with stakeholders today on what programs would be useful for achieving the goal.
Farmers who are currently finding it difficult to increase milk production due to non-payment of milk, were told on the occasion that this project would help increase milk production as the cost would decrease with the implementation of the project. At the program, Bhagirath Timilsina, Vice President of the Central Milk Producers Cooperative Association, said that the country could be made self-reliant in milk if the cost of milk could be reduced.
Says that farmers are worried even though there is no uniformity in the demand for milk in the local market, he said that demand will increase if the quality of milk can be maintained. Dr. Keshav Shah, Program Director of Heifer International, which collaborated in the project, said that they have taken up the work to transform the dairy production sector in Nepal.
He said that they have been working for a long time to make Nepal self-reliant in milk by facilitating farmers on how to benefit from milk production. Bhola Shrestha, who is overseeing the project, said that farmers are not satisfied because there is no profit and no competition.
He said that it is necessary to take care of genetic characteristics to maintain quality in milk. Currently, 350,000 liters of milk are being produced in the district daily. Out of that, 150,000 liters of milk is sold outside the district.
The association is supporting farmers and cooperatives through various programs and assistance for the next two months of this year. An agreement has been reached with the association to work in collaboration with Heifer in collaboration with the local level by making an annual agreement.
