Kathmandu. The Nagdhunga tunnel is going to come into operation from next December. Preparations have been made to bring the tunnel into operation within the next six months if there is an environment to work at the same pace. Ramesh Prasad Koirala, an engineer at Nippon Koi, a consultancy firm of the project, said that 90 percent physical progress has been made and 10 percent of the work is still pending.

“At present, we are aiming to complete the construction work in the first week of October and hand it over to the board of directors as per the agreement to test the equipment and coordinate it in the work of the entire tunnel,” said Engineer Koirala. It may take up to two months. ’

According to him, the project is finalizing the work of providing tunnel facicity such as fire brigade, emergency rescue, CCTV cameras, communication and security mechanism, continuous flow of oxygen inside the tunnel for the safety, smooth movement and human safety of the tunnel route. The 2.7-km long tunnel will start from Dahachowk of Chandragiri Municipality in Kathmandu in the eastern end and end at Sisne Khola of Dhunibesi Municipality in Dhading on the west side. Parallel auxiliary tunnels have also been dug for parallel rescue operations.

Once operational, the physical distance from Nagdhunga to Balambu will be reduced by about three kilometers, while fuel and road users are expected to save about an hour in terms of traffic jam on the prevailing route, the uphill and winding roads, etc. Engineer Koirala said that physical progress has been achieved by making the geographical uncertainty, budget arrangement and coordination with the locals favorable to the project. He said that although there was some confusion among the local people, Chandragiri Municipality and Dhunibesi Municipality regarding the management of the water coming out of the tunnel, preparations were being made to address it.

According to Koeral, the construction of the park towards Sisne Khola has been postponed due to a dispute over the ownership of the land. According to him, the land owner’s palace has been damaged due to the names of both the roads department and the person in the land revenue document.
