Myagdi. Rughachaur, located in Gurja, Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality-1 of Myagdi, is waiting for tourists and infrastructure. Rughachaur, located in the Barse block of the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve spread across Myagdi, Baglung and East Rukum, has been overlooked due to lack of infrastructure and publicity. Rughachaur, located at an altitude of 3,800 meters above sea level, is the main checkpoint on the trekking route to and from Gurja and Dhorpatan.
From here, one can observe the views of Annapurna, Gurja, Dhaulagiri, Sisne, Putha, Churen Himal, sunrise and sunset, said Jhak Bahadur Chhantyal, ward chairman of Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality-1 Gurja. During the rainy season, residents of Muna, Dar, Lulang, Lamsung, and Khoriya of Dhawalagiri Rural Municipality take their cattle, sheep, and goats to the vast pastures of Rughachaur. At other times, Rughachaur is deserted.
‘We have identified the route used by shepherds to travel between Dhorpatan-Rughachaur-Gurja in ancient times and have also built a footpath from Gurja to Rughachaur,’ he said. ‘We have sought the cooperation of the provincial and federal governments to build infrastructure for a plan to bring tourists coming to Dhorpatan to Gurja via Rughachaur and to take tourists coming from Gurja to Dhorpatan.’
Ward Chairman Chhantyalleb informed that the Rughachaur area is also the habitat of the rare wild animal Habre (red panda). Rughachaur can be reached after a four-hour walk from Gurja. There are no hotels or restaurants in Rughachaur. There is a shortage of drinking water.
Ashwin Khatri of Dhawalagiri Rural Municipality-7, Dharapani, who returned from Gurja to Rughachaur via Gurjaghat to Dhorpatan, said that Rughachaur is a mine of natural beauty. He informed that he was amazed to observe the mountains visible in front of his eyes, the wildlife found in the pastures, and the birds.
Khatri said that even if it is temporary, there should be food and accommodation facilities in Rughachaur and signs on the trekking route. There is a possibility that Rughachaur can be made a ‘virgin’ destination. Ward Chairman Chhantyal said that Rughachaur should be developed as an auxiliary destination of Dhorpatan.
A three-kilometer, six-hundred-meter trekking route has been constructed from the Doptakhola in Gurja to the uphill section of Rughachaur with a budget of Rs. 1.5 million. He also informed that through this trekking route, Gurja and Gurjaghat in Dhorpatan can be reached in a single day.
