Myagdi. Banana farmers in Myagdi are worried after the disease started drying up banana plants. The disease has affected banana fields in various villages of Beni Municipality, Raghuganga and Mangala Rural Municipality in the district.
Farmer Tek Bahadur Khadka of Mangala Rural Municipality-3, whose thousands of banana plants that were ready to be planted, started drying up, said, “We have not been able to find out what happened. The plants have dried up as if they were eaten by drought, the leaves have fallen off, and the pods have not been planted.” He has cultivated bananas in four ropanis.
Similarly, Khim Bahadur Karki of Bagarphant, Beni Municipality-2, who has been cultivating bananas for the past five years, also said that a new type of disease has been seen in bananas. “I have been cultivating bananas for six years, and I have never seen the plants dry up like they are now,” he said. He said that even agricultural technicians have not been able to identify the disease.
Farmers from Khabara, Bagarphant, Rakhu, Arman, Peepalbot and other places in the district have been earning good income from banana cultivation, but now their income is going to decrease due to the disease that causes banana plants to dry up.
Chandra Bahadur Karki of Khabara, Beni Municipality-2, who has been cultivating bananas for the past 14 years, lamented that the problems arising in banana cultivation will make it very difficult to run his household this year.
