Myagdi. The historically important Luri Gumba in Yara, Loghekar-Damodarkunda Rural Municipality-4 of Mustang, has been neglected. The eight-hundred-year-old cave monastery, which has been neglected due to lack of publicity about its religious and historical importance, is also awaiting preservation.

According to the monastery’s owner, Thakpa Dholkar, the Lurighang Gumba of the Nyingmapa sect, which is close to Tantric Buddhism, was built in the 12th century.

Luri Gumba, located on the slopes of a mountain in the eastern corner of Yara at an altitude of about four thousand meters above sea level, is a unique religious heritage. The monastery is located in three caves in the middle of the mountain through a path and stairs.

A wooden ladder is placed when reaching the courtyard. The main part of the monastery, the lama’s place of meditation, is located in a cave that has been carved into the mountain. Ani Dholkar said that the chorten of the Luri monastery is natural.

There is also a small part where you can walk around the chorten with attractive murals. The paintings here were made in the fifteenth century.

Since the rock itself was built as a pillar, the monastery contains murals, books, old thangkas, and a statue of Padmasambhava. There is a history that the then King of Lhoka, who married a Bhutanese girl, built the Luri Monastery to please his wife.

The locals call it Luri Kavung. According to another legend, a Lama named Kunchhang Jhalu, who was born in Yaragaun and attained enlightenment through penance.

The locals consider the peak of the mountain beyond the monastery to be the abode of Kunchhang Jhalu Lama. Another monastery has also been built on the banks of the Peyungkhola, a little below the main monastery. Ani Dholkar said that regular worship is held in both monasteries.

There are dharamshalas and hotels in Yara and Gharagaun, near Luri Monastery. From Charang, the center of Loghekar Damodarkunda Rural Municipality, it takes an hour to drive through Dhykhola, Dhye, Surkhang, and Yara. After a 20-minute walk from Gharagaun, you can reach Luri Gumba, which is on the way to Damodarkunda.

You can also reach here using the Luri Circuit Trek from Lomanthang. On the way from Charang to Ghara, one can observe Dhye, Surkhang and Yaragaun, mountains with unique shapes.

The Loghekar Damodarkund Rural Municipality and the Gandaki Provincial Government have identified the stone steps leading to Luri Gumba from the road and built a trekking route.

Ward Chairman Pasang Gurung said that about 300 meters of paved trekking route have been constructed uphill with a budget of Rs 1.5 million each from the rural municipality and the provincial government. Ward Chairman Gurung said that a budget of Rs 5 million has been allocated for building public toilets this year.
