In a field survey of native crops including apples conducted by the Agricultural Knowledge Center Mustang in various places in the district, farmers It has been concluded that the orchard management of crops including apples has been done well.
The center, in the joint coordination and cooperation of the district’s farmers, farmer groups, agricultural cooperatives, agricultural farms, local levels, Prime Minister’s Agriculture Modernization Project Implementation Unit, Temperate Horticulture Development Center, Agricultural Knowledge Center (ACAP) and all stakeholders, has found good results in the orchard management and pest control of all crops in Mustang farmers. It is estimated that the quality and production rate will increase this year compared to the previous year.
Although the apple production in the district was good last year, due to climate change, the apple blossoming time was adversely affected due to fog and rain during the pollination of apples. Due to this, the production and quality of apples in the district decreased that year.
Since apple farming is the backbone of the economic prosperity of the district, the farmers here have given apple farming a top priority. In addition, indigenous crops such as yam, phapar, barley and local potatoes have become a hallmark of the district’s agricultural production.
Apple orchards are managed in the district during the months of Pus and Magh. For apple farming, unauthorized pruning of branches, use of manure, fertilizers, herbs, and irrigation of cultivable land are arranged.
Apart from apples, they plant crops such as yam, phapar, barley, and potatoes in the months of Asoj and Kartik to manage the entire orchard. In Upper Mustang, farmers plant grain crops such as yam, barley, wheat, and phapar from Falgun.
Recently, farmers in the district have been cultivating local varieties of apples along with high-density (hybrid) apple farming in new orchards. Farmers in Mustang are starting to be attracted to hybrid apple farming as they can produce more in a small area in the second year.
Apple farming is being done in all five local levels of Mustang. With the national pride road network facilitating transportation, the marketing of crops including apples produced by farmers in the district has become much easier.
Last year, the district produced 7,330 metric tons of apples, and apples worth 830 million were exported outside the district. Out of 1,400 hectares of apple farming in the five local levels of the district, apples are produced in 585 hectares. Apple farming in the district has not only benefited farmers, but has also helped the local tourism industry.
Since apples are abundantly produced in the apple orchards here from August to September, domestic and foreign tourists visiting Mustang also visit the apple orchards, take photos, and taste the apples right in the orchards.
