MP Dr. Shakya elected to IPU’s Sustainable Development Standing Committee

Kathmandu. Dr. Anjan Shakya, a member of the National Assembly from the Asia-Pacific region, has been elected to the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). She won during the conference held in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. Along with MP Dr. Shakya, candidacies were also filed from Maldives and Iran. Speaker Devraj Ghimire and a team are participating in the 150th Annual Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Fourth Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network. Speaker Ghimire had written a letter to the speakers of the 36 countries of the IPU Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, requesting their support for Dr. Shakya.

MP Dr. Shakya had presented her candidacy on behalf of the Asia-Pacific region in the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development. This is the first time Nepal has made its presence known at this forum. MP Dr Shakya said that she felt that her victory helped increase Nepal’s prestige on the international stage. “The Speaker had written a letter requesting my support,” she said, “I had also personally requested my support. The success was achieved through all of our efforts.”

She also thanked the Prime Minister, the Speaker, the International Division of the Parliament Secretariat, and others. MP Dr Shakya is a member of the Development, Economic Affairs and Good Governance Committee of the National Assembly and the coordinator of the Sustainable Development Subcommittee of the same committee. Under her leadership, the ‘Study Report on Nepal’s Upgrading from a Least Developed Country to a Developing Country-2081’ report has been prepared and submitted to the Development, Economic Affairs and Good Governance Committee of the National Assembly.
