Kathmandu. The Meteorological Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has said that the monsoon, which entered Nepal 15 days earlier than the average date, will remain inactive for a week now. The monsoon, which entered most parts of Koshi Province on Thursday night after entering from the east of Nepal, remains inactive for a week.

Meteorologist at the Division, Hari Prasad Dahal, said rainfall is expected to reduce as the monsoon, which has spread to Koshi province since Monday, has become inactive for a few days. “Although the average date for the arrival of monsoon in Nepal is June 13, monsoon arrived from the eastern region of Nepal on May 29. Now the monsoon is likely to be inactive for a week,” he said, adding that heavy rainfall in the eastern region on the day of the onset of monsoon has also affected it. ’

Department’s flood expert Binod Parajuli said that more than 200 mm of rainfall was recorded on the day of the onset of monsoon in the eastern region. He said some areas have been inundated due to flooding as the water level in the river has increased due to rain. “The department has predicted more rainfall than the average in the monsoon. Most parts of the country are likely to receive more rainfall than the average during the four-month monsoon season,” he said.

According to the Division, the eastern region of Karnali Province, northern region of Lumbini Province and most parts of Gandaki Province are likely to receive more rainfall than the average of 55 to 65 percent. According to Parajuli, the Department has started providing direct information to the mass media and stakeholders throughout the monsoon period with the objective of disseminating information related to water and weather forecasts, vigilance and warning more systematic, effective and timely.

“The Department has started the ‘briefing’ every day at 11:00 am in the office, informing about the information, forecast and warning related to water and weather across the country,” he said, adding that all the mass media, government and private stakeholders, NGOs, agencies involved in rescue and relief have been facilitated to communicate directly with the department and disseminate water and weather related information. ’

The Department has been providing 24-hour service through 1155 toll-free numbers for weather-related information and 1155 toll-free numbers for flood-related information.
