Kathmandu. The issue of appointing a governor is still pending. Even the powerful government formed by the Congress-UML coalition has not been able to appoint a governor in the National Bank so far.

There has been a big tug-of-war between the Congress and the UML over the issue of appointing a governor. Although some leaders of the Congress-UML claimed that an agreement had been reached between Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on the appointment of the governor, the cabinet meeting held on Monday could not appoint the governor. A minister said that the issue of appointing a governor did not even enter the cabinet meeting on Monday.

The government has failed to comply with the National Bank Act as vested interests dominate the appointment of governors. The National Bank Act has clearly stipulated that a new governor should be appointed one month before the end of the governor’s term. However, the government has been creating controversy that has tarnished the image of the National Bank. Nepali Congress President Deuba has left for Thailand on Baisakh 20. He is scheduled to return home only after a week. According to sources, it has been claimed that some middlemen have also reached Thailand. UML leaders are worried that this news could lead to a change in power.
