Memorandum of Understanding between Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh and Mahidol University

Kathmandu. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Nepal Netrajyoti Sangh and Mahidol University of Thailand for the development and expansion of eye treatment services. The two organizations signed an MoU in Bangkok today in the presence of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who is on an official visit to Thailand, and Thai Prime Minister Pething Shinawatra, who is on a visit to Thailand.

It is stated that an MoU has been signed between the two organizations for the exchange of knowledge, expertise and technologies for the development and expansion of eye treatment services. The agreement was signed by Prof. Dr. Chetraj Pant, President of Nepal Netrajyoti Sangh, and Prof. Artit Unkanant, Dean of Ramathibodi Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Mahidol University.

As per the said agreement, the two organizations will now jointly conduct eye care programs including eye examinations in Thailand, Nepal and other countries. According to Dr. Shailesh Kumar Mishra, Executive Director of Nepal Netrajyoti Sangh, they will work jointly to enhance the experience and capacity of ophthalmologists and other experts involved in eye services in Nepal and Thailand, and there will also be an exchange of ‘internships’ and scholarships.

Mahidol University is considered the oldest and most prestigious medical institution in Thailand. Founded in 1888 by the then King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), the university has achieved excellence in medical research and education and has been making significant contributions to the promotion of healthcare globally.

Established in 1978, Nepal Netrajyoti Sangh is a leading non-governmental organization in Nepal. It has been providing affordable and quality eye treatment services. Through 28 eye hospitals, 224 eye treatment centers, and 45 district branches, the association has been serving more than 3 million people annually and has performed more than 300,000 eye surgeries. This understanding between the two organizations is said to have begun a new chapter in Nepal-Thailand cooperation. The association believes that it will provide high-quality eye care services and play a significant role in reducing preventable blindness across the region.
