Kathmandu. Melamchi water has been released into the Bagmati River to increase the flow of water during Shivaratri. The water has been released with the aim of making it easier for devotees coming to visit Pashupati to bathe in the river and to enhance its beauty.

Ratna Lamichhane, Executive Director of Melamchi Drinking Water Development Committee, informed that about one thousand liters of Melamchi water has been released into the Bagmati at a rate of one second.

‘We used to release 600 liters of water per second into the river at other times as well. Although the capacity of the project is said to be 170 million, now we have brought 230 million liters of drinking water per day. “Out of that, we will distribute 200 million to consumers and discharge the remaining 30 million into the river,” he said. “Not only during Shivaratri, Melamchi is helping to increase the flow of water in the Bagmati on other festivals and daily.”

According to him, water will be discharged for Shivaratri by 8 am on Thursday. ‘The project had to be closed for a few months to protect the Melamchi Drinking Water Project from monsoon disasters. At that time, we met the needs of Kathmandu consumers by bringing water from Dhap Dam,’ said Lamichhane. ‘We will also distribute water from Dhap Dam in the coming rains.’

On Shivaratri last year, the Bagmati Improvement Project under the Integrated Bagmati Civilization Development Committee released water from Dhap Dam into the Bagmati River during Chhath Parva.

Uddhav Nepal, Deputy Project Director and Information Officer of the Bagmati Improvement Project, informed that water was borrowed from Melamchi to increase the flow of water in the river and make it easier for the visitors to bathe. .

‘We have been releasing dam water into the Bagmati on special days like Shivaratri and Chhath,’ he said. ‘This time, since the dam water is yet to be tested on Shivaratri, we have made a loan to provide dam water to the Melamchi Drinking Water Project in the coming monsoon.’

The project was built with the aim of collecting rain from the sky during the rainy season at Dham Dam and releasing it into the Bagmati River during the winter. The project aims to release the water collected here during the rainy season into the Bagmati River at a rate of 400 liters per second during the winter season.
