Benny. Annapurna: A marathon race competition is going to be held at Annapurna First Base Camp on the occasion of the Diamond Festival of Annapurna First Mountain (8091 meters) climbing. Myagdi: A 30-km marathon is going to be held at the Diamond Festival organized by Annapurna Rural Municipality of Myagdi to mark the 75th anniversary of the first human step in Annapurna.
According to Rural Municipality Chair Bharat Kumar Pun, the marathon will be held from Annapurna Base Camp of Annapurna Rural Municipality-4 to Narchiang village on June 15. Around 60 people are taking part in the marathon. Chairman Pun said that for the first time in the district, a marathon race competition is going to be held at a high altitude on the occasion of Annapurna Diamond Festival, which is being celebrated with various programs from June 16 to 27.
Five people from all eight wards of Annapurna rural municipality, two each from five other local levels of the district and more youth from Narchiang area will also participate in the marathon, said Chitra Tilija, a member of the marathon race competition sub-committee. The first, second and third runners-up will get Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively.
Various programs have been planned on the occasion of Diamond Festival along with ancestral dances. At the base camp, the statues of the first climbers Maurice Herzog, Luis Lachenal and Nepali climber Sonam Wangchuk Sherpa will be unveiled and an open museum constructed at the base camp and the Maurice Herzog trekking route connecting Narchiang to the base camp will also be inaugurated.
On the occasion, preparations have also been made to keep records of the climbers in inscriptions at the base camp, said Tej Gurung, a member of Annapurna Rural Municipality Tourism Development Committee and an activist of Annapurna First Base Camp Trekking Route. Mount Annapurna is known as a historic day in the mountaineering history of Nepal. On June 3, 1950, four people, including Louis Lachnel and two Nepalese Sherpas, led by French mountaineer Maurice Harzog, successfully climbed Mount Annapurna I.
