Tanahun. The excreta management center built near the Sudeko bridge in Byas Municipality-13 of the district has been unused for seven years. The center, which was built in 2074 BS with the aim of ‘treating’ the excreta coming out of the toilet and using it as fertilizer, has been unused.
The then Small Urban and Drinking Water Project had allocated 120 million rupees under the sanitation program. In which, there was an eight-kilometer concrete drain construction in the Damauli Bazaar area, a tipper for Byas Municipality for waste management, construction of public toilets and excreta management.
Ammar Giri, Manager of Damauli Drinking Water and Sanitation Consumers’ Organization, informed that about 40 million rupees were invested for the said excreta management alone. The excreta management center was built with 85 percent investment from the Government of Nepal and 15 percent from the local level. Construction company Raman Construction Pvt. Ltd. has stated that it is yet to receive Rs 8 million for the construction.
Byas Mayor Baikuntha Neupane said that the center has become unused as it was not handed over to the Byas Municipality after the construction was completed. “The plan started by the federal government was supposed to be completed that same year, but it was completed only the next year. It has become unusable due to the confusion over who will be responsible after the constitution is made,” he said. Mayor Neupane informed that the municipality is serious about putting the constructed structure into use.
