Agency. Malaysia’s total population reached 34.2 million in the fourth quarter of last year. This is a slow growth of 1.3 percent. The Department of Statistics Malaysia said the population growth rate has also slowed down along with the decline in the number of live births.
The total population consists of 30.8 million (90.1 percent) citizens and 34 million (9.9 percent) non-citizens. The male population increased from 17.7 million to 18 million in the fourth quarter of 2023. While the female population increased from 16 million to 16.2 million.
Ethnic Malaysians made up 58.1 percent of the population in the fourth quarter. This was a slight increase from 58 percent a year earlier. During the same period, the number of Indians has decreased from 6.6 percent to 6.5 percent, while the number of Chinese has remained unchanged at 22.4 percent.
