Us President Donald Trump’s sweeping new travel ban came into effect immediately after midnight on Monday.
It has banned citizens of a dozen countries from entering the United States and revived divisive measures from his first term. The move is expected to disrupt refugee routes and further restrict immigration by expanding the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal entry.
Many countries, such as Iran and Afghanistan, which have been covered by sanctions, have hostile relations with the United States, while countries like Haiti and Libya are facing a serious crisis. Announcing his ban last week, Trump said the recent “terrorist attack” on Jews in Colorado had prompted new measures.
The group was protesting in solidarity with hostages held in Gaza and was attacked by a man by the White House for exceeding their visas. “That attack underscores the extreme threats posed to our country by the entry of foreign nationals who have not been properly screened or have overstayed their visas,” Trump said. According to the White House, all travel to the United States by citizens of Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo-Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen has been banned.
Trump also imposed partial restrictions on travellers from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela. Some temporary work visas will be allowed from these countries. Trump has warned that new countries could be added as threats arise around the world.
World Cup, Olympics, Not affecting diplomats
The ban does not apply to athletes competing in the 2026 World Cup or the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. The United States is co-hosting the World Cup with Canada and Mexico. The order will also not apply to diplomats in the target country.
U.N. rights chief Volker Turk warned that “the broad and broad nature of the new travel ban raises concern from the point of view of international law.” Democratic lawmakers and elected officials have criticized the ban as harsh and unconstitutional.
“I know the pain that Trump’s brutal and anti-foreign travel restrictions will bring because my family has felt it firsthand,” Iranian-American lawmaker Yassamin Ansari said on Sunday. After the Colorado attacks, rumors of a new travel ban spread.
Trump’s administration promised to follow “terrorists” living in the United States on visas. U.S. officials said according to court documents, suspected Egyptian Mohamed Sabri Soliman had illegally stayed on a tourist visa but applied for asylum in September 2022.
Trump’s new travel ban does not specifically include Egypt. His announcement said Taliban-ruled Afghanistan and war-torn Libya, Sudan, Somalia and Yemen lack “competent” central officials to process and check passports. “Iran was included because it is a ‘state sponsor of terrorism’,” the order said. Trump’s order for other countries cites a higher-than-average likelihood that people will exceed the duration of their visas.
