Agency. Britain’s Heathrow airport, Europe’s busiest, was closed early Friday morning after a major fire broke out at a neighboring electrical substation that supplies power to the facility west of London, officials said.
Some flights had already been diverted, while airport officials said they expected “significant disruption in the coming days,” according to flight-tracking website FlightRadar24. “Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage,” the airport operator said in a statement on its website. “This will be closed until midnight (2359 GMT) on Friday, with passengers advised not to travel to the airport under any circumstances until the airport reopens.”
The London Fire Brigade said a “significant” fire had broken out at a substation at Hess in the London Borough of Hillingdon. “The fire has caused power outages affecting a large number of homes and local businesses and we are working closely with our partners to minimise disruption,” said Assistant Commissioner Pat Golborne. “This is a highly visible and significant incident and our firefighters are working tirelessly in challenging conditions to bring the fire under control as quickly as possible.”
A Qantas flight from Perth The United Airlines flight from New York was diverted to Charles de Gaulle in Paris and was due to land at Shannon in Ireland. Heathrow handles more than 80 million passengers a year.
