Nawalparasi. Nawalparasi (Bardaghat (Susta West) Susta Rural Municipality (5) Paklihawa has become a self-employed place after the suspension bridge built over the Narayani River came into operation. After the suspension bridge came into operation a year ago, the locals have started creating employment opportunities through various types of shops.
After tourists from the district as well as India started coming to see the suspension bridge built here, business has started increasing in shops run by locals, said Prabhunath Yadav, Ward Chairman of Susta-5. ‘It has been a year since the suspension bridge came into operation here. So far, we have not been able to build homestays (gharbas) and organized vehicle parking lots. The locals are becoming self-employed by operating small shops. This is improving the economic level of the locals,’ he said. .
Ward Chairman Yadav said that tourists have started coming here from internal and neighboring areas of India, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and a small number from other countries. Stating that more than a thousand tourists have started coming to view the suspension bridge daily, he mentioned that the daily life of the locals has started changing with the emergence of self-employment.
After the construction of the suspension bridge in Susta, this area has become more attractive and tourism activities are becoming more active, said Rural Municipality Chairman Teknaran Upadhyaya. He said that since the locals are currently earning income through operating small shops, the municipality has planned to operate houses in the coming days to create new employment opportunities for tourists by providing them with easy management for accommodation and food.
Chairman Upadhyay opined that since West Nawalparasi is in the Terai-Madhes region, it could become an attractive destination for tourists coming to Nepal from India. He said that employment opportunities will be increased by arranging sweets, snacks and tea shops, stalls that cook fresh dishes by catching fish from the river, and organized vehicle parking on the east and west sides of the bridge.
‘After the construction of the suspension bridge, the locals including Susta are happy to be able to easily travel across the Narayani River on motorcycles. The number of tourists coming to see the bridge is also increasing, said Khurshed Hajam, a local of Pratappur Rural Municipality.
The 1,571-meter-long bridge was built a year ago at a cost of Rs. 236.598 million.
