Chitwan. The stakeholders have stressed the need for local governments to work unitedly on climate change, disaster management and environment. Speaking at a workshop on climate change disaster management and environment at the local level organized by the District Coordination Committee here today, the participants said that it would be effective if the local government could work in collaboration on the issues of disasters and climate change.
Mayor of Bharatpur Metropolitan City Renu Dahal stressed the need for all local levels to work in collaboration to deal with all kinds of disasters in Chitwan. Stating that climate change is posing a risk to human life, she said local governments are working to reduce its impact. “Risk management is being done and it needs to be done more effectively,” she said. Climate change is increasing day by day, he said.
Narayan Prasad Adhikari, chief of the District Coordination Committee, said the local levels should work together in the areas of climate and environment. “We have to work together to protect the environment as it is directly related to human life,” he said. He stressed the need for the federal government to work effectively from the local level as it was working with high priority on these issues. He called upon all the seven municipalities of the district to sit together and formulate a common strategy. Deputy Mayor Kalpana Kafle Sapkota said the increasing impact of climate change is directly on human health and it would be easier to manage disasters only if it could be prevented.
Presenting a working paper on disaster situation, local level strategy and finding sustainable solutions, expert Dilu Ghimire stressed the need to work in a way that can cope with disasters and climate change in the coming times. He said that the local level needs to do important work to minimize its damage.
Presenting a working paper on climate change and the current state of the environment and the role of stakeholders for conservation, expert Purushottam Aryal said that the local government has not been able to effectively implement the national policies and plans related to climate change. He suggested the local governments to work to integrate climate change into development plans.
On the occasion, Chief Administrative Officer of Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality Chandra Kanta Basnet, Bharatpur Environment and Disaster Branch’s Bisuram Kunwar, Ratnanagar Municipality’s Disaster and Environment Section’s Bishwas Shrestha, Khairhani Municipality’s Disaster and Environment Section’s Ashish Poudel and Madi Municipality’s Shiva Subedi highlighted the work done by the municipality on climate change and disasters.
According to District Coordination Officer Sharma, mayors, deputy mayors, chief administrative officers, employees of environment and disaster wings of the district municipalities participated in the programme. The district has one metropolitan city, five municipalities and one rural municipality.
