Bhojpur. The Safe Migration (SAMI) programme has been implemented here to create awareness about making foreign employment safe and effective. Programme coordinator Karna Pulami Magar said awareness programmes were being conducted at the people’s level to make foreign employment safer. The program, which was being operated only in four local levels in the past, has now been extended to all the nine local levels.

The Migrant Resource Centre here is providing counseling on foreign employment, facilitating free legal services to those who have been duped in connection with foreign employment, and taking initiatives to compensate those who have been maimed and killed while in foreign employment. Similarly, financial literacy and psychosocial counseling classes are being conducted to spend the remittance in the income-generating sector.

The program is being run with 70 percent cost sharing of the government and 30 percent of the cost of the Swiss government. Mayor of Bhojpur Municipality, Kailash Kumar Ale, said that the program has helped in increasing the income by securing foreign employment and earning easy livelihood in the future. Foreign employment is not a compulsion, it is necessary to make it safe and systematic, he said.

Sixty-seven per cent of men and 33 per cent of women have been counselled on safe foreign employment from the migrant resource centre in the district. According to the data, 7,242 people went to foreign employment in the last fiscal year.
