Gorkha. Farmers in Gorkha have earned Rs 111.5 crore this year from the sale of litchi. Prakash Bastakoti, the head of the Agricultural Knowledge Center Gorkha, has informed that farmers in the district have managed to earn nearly Rs 1.5 million more from litchi production this year compared to last year.
‘Last year, litchi worth Rs 100 million was sold here,’ he said, ‘but this time, farmers have sold litchi worth more than Rs 110 million.’ Chief Bastakoti said that the weather was favorable for litchi and the production increased due to good garden management.
‘This year, the weather was favorable for litchi production,’ he said. ‘Even then, the production was good because the farmers applied medicine on time and managed the gardens well with good fertilizer and irrigation.’
Gorkha has produced 1,716 metric tons of litchi this year 6, while last year 1,597 metric tons of litchi were produced. Last year, litchi was produced in an area of 180 hectares, while this year 187 hectares were produced, according to Chief Bastakoti. He said that the farmers earned a lot of income as the produced litchi was sold at the rate of 65 per kilogram.
Palungtar Municipality of the district is considered the main pocket area for litchi farming. 80 percent of litchi is produced from wards 6, 7 and 8 of Palungtar alone. There are about 30,000 litchi trees in these wards. Litchi farming is done on 150 hectares of land in the Palungtar area.
