Kathmandu. Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Nawal Kishore Sah Sudi has said that laws alone are not enough to end child marriage in Madhes. He said this while speaking at the Madhes state-level discussion on suggestions on the draft implementation action plan of the National Children’s Policy-2080 in Janakpur on Sunday.
According to Minister Sah, child marriage is still accepted socially and culturally in Madhes. As a result, it is difficult to effectively implement the legal ban. Stating that the legal age of marriage has been reduced from 20 years to 18 years, Minister Sudi argued that reducing the age is not the solution.
He stressed the need to focus on creating an environment where children’s future is golden, education, security and opportunities. Minister Shah made it clear that effective coordination among the federal, state and local governments was necessary to make the campaign against child marriage a success.
“We have introduced a bill in parliament to reduce the legal age of marriage from 20 years to 18 years. Many parents in Madhes have been pressing for reducing the age of marriage. But reducing age is not the solution. We need to focus on creating an environment where children’s future is golden, education, security and opportunities. ’
Stating that the government wants Nepali children not to stay on the streets, Minister Sudi said that the government has now registered the bill in the parliament after taking suggestions regarding children in all seven provinces.
