Kathmandu. Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has said that the business has not been able to flourish due to lack of infrastructure for information technology.
At the ‘National Information and Communication Technology Day-2082 (National ICT Day)’ program organized by the ministry here today, he said that investment in this sector is necessary as information technology is the main basis for promoting good governance, prosperity and development of the country.
Minister Gurung informed that the ministry has emphasized on timely legislation, infrastructure construction and increase in skilled manpower to make information technology agile. According to him, just as playgrounds are necessary for the development of the sports sector, infrastructure must be built to develop IT. He said, ‘It seems that at least an IT park is not enough. We are planning to make it.’
Minister Gurung informed that the ministry has been working on activities such as removing previous laws and formulating new policies and laws, fully implementing the integrated office management system in local, provincial and federal government offices, enacting an act to make telecommunications up-to-date, extending 4G services across the country and launching the 5G network, organizing data centers, enacting a policy on artificial intelligence, and establishing additional data centers by strengthening and modernizing GIDC.
At the program, National Planning Commission member Dr. Prakash Kumar Shrestha emphasized that although the recent increase in the use of the ICT sector is positive, digital literacy needs to be increased. He suggested creating an environment that would support the state’s economy through the IT sector.
Minister of Labor, Employment and Transport, Bagmati Province, Prem Bhakta Maharjan, said that the ministry has emphasized the impact of digital services to achieve the government of Nepal’s objective of creating a digital framework. Mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Chiribabu Maharjan, gave an example of how the metropolis has been made civilized, well-governed and organized by utilizing information technology.
