Kathmandu. Today, May Day, i.e. the 136th International Workers’ Day of this year, is being celebrated with various programs. This day is celebrated every year on May 1 to ensure the professional dignity and respect of workers and to establish their rights.
Workers all over the world have been celebrating this day with various programs, taking this day as a festival and putting pressure on the government and employers to ensure their rights. This time too, various labor organizations in Nepal are celebrating this day with various programs.
This day is being celebrated every year on this day in memory of the labor movement that started in Chicago, America on May 1, 1886 with the slogan ‘Eight hours of work, eight hours of recreation and eight hours of rest’. During the movement, seven workers were killed in a bomb explosion and police firing at a place called Hay Market in Chicago. The labor movement finally achieved success.
Later, in 1889, a meeting of world labor organizations and labor leaders held in Paris, France, decided to celebrate International Workers’ Day worldwide. In Nepal, too, in Biratnagar, BS. This day was celebrated with the success of the labor movement in 2003 and the change in BS 2007.
With the political change in BS 2046, a public holiday was also given on this day in Nepal. The tradition of May Day here was introduced to protest against the Panchayat rule. According to the Nepal Trade Union Federation, May Day was first organized by the Nepal Workers’ Organization in BS 2019.
