Ghorahi. Mahendra Khadka of Runtigadi Rural Municipality-7 Gaira, Rolpa, who has been cultivating vegetables in Narayanpur, Ghorahi Umaha Municipality-10, has provided employment to 38 local people. He has been cultivating vegetables on rent on 13 bighas of land.
Khadka has been engaged in vegetable cultivation professionally for 10 years. Khadka initially cultivated a small amount following the work done by his father, but after starting to cultivate it professionally, he cultivated a large amount.
He says that production is increasing every year as he learns about modern methods used in vegetable cultivation. Farmer Khadka said that he has gained a lot of experience in farming.
‘Vegetable farming, which I have been doing with the idea of doing something in my homeland, has been yielding good results,’ he said. ‘I have seen a lot of potential in vegetable farming in the agricultural profession and have been continuing it, and as I have been farming accordingly, production has started to increase.’
He has been operating through Rapti Bawai Agriculture Pvt. Ltd. and has been producing vegetables including bodi, cucumber, bitter gourd, and tomato. Farmer Khadka says that he used to grow vegetables in Rolpa a few years ago, but since there were problems with transportation and marketing there, he moved to Dang and started growing vegetables more professionally.
Khadka, who has been growing vegetables on rent, said that it brings him attractive income. He says that since he has been involved in this profession since childhood, he has not paid attention to other work and is satisfied with it. Khadka has been producing vegetables worth more than Rs 20 million annually.
‘From which I have been saving 35 percent, I have been paying Rs 500,000 annually for the rented land,’ he said, ‘They are also happy to see the local citizens working on the vegetable farm, the situation of having to go elsewhere to earn a few paisa has ended, he plans to further expand the business in the future.’
Local Geeta Mahara, who has been working on the vegetable farm, says she is happy to have a job close to home. She says she has been getting her salary on time for her work.
Like her, Ranjita Chaudhary also says she has been working on the same vegetable farm for the past two years. He said that since working here, he has received some help with his family’s household expenses. He says that he does not have to go elsewhere to earn a few bucks without much sorrow.
Despite the abundant production potential in his own country, vegetables worth crores of rupees are being imported annually. Local leaders have suggested that the governments at all three levels should focus on increasing employment within the country by encouraging vegetable farming, which can be produced domestically and does not have any marketing problems.
