Karnali produces 258,000 metric tons of corn

Surkhet. Among the food grains produced in Karnali Province, maize is the most produced. According to the Ministry of Land Management, Agriculture and Cooperatives of the provincial government, this year Karnali has produced the most maize at 258,876 metric tons.

The Directorate of Agriculture under the ministry has stated that maize is being cultivated on an area of 82,808 hectares in Karnali. The most produced crop after maize is wheat. According to the statistics of all ten districts of the province, wheat is being cultivated on an area of 71,769 hectares. The Directorate of Agriculture has stated that 151,990 metric tons of wheat was produced across the province last year alone.

According to Tilak Pandey, director of the directorate, rice production ranks third. Stating that 146,679 metric tons of rice were produced last year, he mentioned that rice cultivation was being carried out on an area of 41,304 hectares in Karnali.

Pandey informed that 18,826 metric tons of millet, 9,709 metric tons of barley and 2,633 metric tons of phapar were produced. Millet and phapar are mainly produced in the Himalayan region. The Directorate has stated that millet is being cultivated on an area of 13,704 hectares and phapar is being cultivated on an area of 2,377 hectares.

How much food grain is produced in which district?

According to the Directorate’s statistics, Salyan is the district with the highest corn production. Salyan has produced 74,700 metric tons of maize this year.

While Surkhet produced 45,475 metric tons of maize, Dailekh produced 45,310 metric tons, Jajarkot 33,313 metric tons, and Rukum West produced 35,340 metric tons, informed the director of the directorate, Pandey.

According to him, Kalikot produced 8,60 metric tons, Jumla 10,500 metric tons, Mugu 2,138 metric tons, Dolpa 3,750 metric tons, and Humla 290 metric tons of maize. .

Similarly, Surkhet is seen leading in wheat production. Surkhet has produced 34,102 metric tons of wheat this year, while Salyan has produced 28,528 metric tons.

Jajarkot has produced 25,100 metric tons, Rukum West 21,713 metric tons, Dailekh 17,274 metric tons, Kalikot 11,313 metric tons, Jumla 5,408 metric tons, Dolpa 4,165 metric tons, Mugu 3,272 metric tons, and Humla 1,115 metric tons of wheat, according to the directorate.

Surkhet also ranks first in rice production, said Pandey, director of the directorate. Looking at the statistics of rice production this year, 63,080 metric tons have been produced in Surkhet.

According to him, 27,152 metric tons have been produced in Dailekh, 23,710 metric tons in Salyan, 9,455 metric tons in Rukum West, 9,307 in Jajarkot, 5,987 in Jumla, and 5,500 metric tons in Kalikot.

Similarly, while 1,120 metric tons of rice have been produced in Humla, 1,023 metric tons in Mugu, and 345 metric tons of rice have been produced in Dolpa. Seven districts in Karnali are self-sufficient in food grains, while the other three districts have not been able to become self-sufficient in food grains.

The provincial government has stated that various programs are being implemented to increase production in Karnali. Director Pandey informed that the government is implementing programs ranging from providing loans with interest subsidies to rewarding excellent farmers.
