Ilam. Khadga Bahadur Karki of Mangsebung Rural Municipality-2 in the district does not have to look to others to meet household expenses. He has been able to meet his household expenses through commercial acacia farming in his own garden. He has been earning 1.5 million annually.

Karki, an entrepreneur who returned from his job in Malaysia and registered ‘Bataha Agriculture and Nursery Farm’ two years ago and started acacia farming professionally, has been earning 1.5 million annually. ‘Last year, 11 quintals of acacia were produced from 1,000 plants, which was a good income for the first time,’ said Karki. ‘I have expanded my farming since this year as it is sold in the garden for 250 to 300 rupees per kg.’

This year, he has planted 5,000 acacia plants. He has expanded his cultivation to eight ropanis by renting four of his own and four of his neighbor’s land. He said that he expanded his cultivation because he was not worried about the market for the produce. ‘I have expanded my cultivation with the goal of earning 10 to 15 lakhs annually after cutting all expenses.’ ‘This plant produces for two years, green chillies can be picked every day, but ripe ones can be picked twice a week, 30 kg can be produced from one thousand plants in the first batch and 20 kg in the second batch,’ said Karki.

Green chillies are sold from the farm for 250 per kg. The chillies produced here are taken by traders from Ilam market to Damak in Jhapa and Itahari in Sunsari. Karki, who initially started chilli farming in his own farm with a small investment, said that he plans to expand to 10,000 plants. In addition to this, he has also been growing tomatoes, eggplant, cabbage, onions, and avocado and coffee seedlings.
