Kailali farmers earning lakhs from local potato cultivation

Kailali. Farmers here have started earning good income from local variety of Tharualu. Recently, hundreds of farmers here have started earning good income from Tharualu.

Sheruram Chaudhary of Shantitol, Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan City-6 said that he earned Rs 3 lakh from selling Tharualu this year. He had cultivated potatoes in eight plots this year. Having produced 40 quintals of potatoes, he said, ‘I still have 20 quintals of potatoes to sell. Potatoes grew well this year. The price was good because the potatoes were harvested on time. They were sold at Rs 150 per kg.’

According to him, this variety of potatoes is tasty to eat and there is no fear of spoiling if stored for a long time. He also said that he grows vegetables. He said, “I plant vegetables according to the season. By cutting all expenses from vegetable farming and potatoes, I save up to six lakhs annually. I have been able to meet the household expenses of a family of four and the education expenses of my children through vegetable farming.”

Patriram Chaudhary of the same place said that he produced 25 quintals of Tharu potatoes this year. He said, “I had planted Tharu potatoes on seven kathas of land this year. I have sold eight quintals. I have kept the rest to sell in Ashar. We sell up to 20 quintals. We keep the rest for food and seeds.”

He also said that he also grows vegetables along with potato farming. He saves up to 3 lakhs annually from selling vegetables and Tharu potatoes. He says that Tharualu, which was stopped being grown as demand increased, has recently started to be grown.

Ravi Chaudhary, a local from the same place, said that he cultivated Tharualu in four katthas this year. He said, “This year, we have produced about eight quintals. We have not sold it now because the price has decreased. We will sell it when the price increases.” He said that he earns an annual income of 2 lakh rupees from the sale of vegetables and Tharualu.
