Agency. Japan’s average unemployment rate fell 0.1 percentage point to 2.5 percent from a year earlier, according to public government data released on Friday. The number of people joining the workforce rose by 370,000 to 67.93 million by March 2025, according to the data.
The decline in employment is the steepest since comparable data began to be available in 1953, while the number of unemployed people fell by 30,000 to 1.75 million, according to figures from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
A ministry official said that as the labor shortage continues, it is possible for unemployed people to find new positions immediately after being laid off. According to the ministry, the unemployment rate rose to 2.5 percent in March alone, from 2.4 percent in the previous month.
Separate data from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare showed that Japan’s average employment availability ratio in fiscal 2024 fell by 0.04 points from a year earlier to 1.25, meaning there were 125 job openings for every 100 job seekers.
The ratio of jobs to applicants rose by 0.02 points from February to 1.26, the Labor Ministry said.
